Rockslide injures 3 on U.S. 2 near Leavenworth; trooper says outcome ‘could have been way worse’

A falling rock crashed across lanes and into a westbound car, sending three passengers to the hospital, including a 12-year-old.

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — A rockslide along U.S. Highway 2 sent three people to the hospital earlier this week after a boulder crashed into a westbound vehicle near milepost 97, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The crash happened about three miles from Leavenworth when a rock fell from the eastbound side of the highway, crossed the eastbound lane and struck a car headed west. The river sits on the opposite side of the road, leaving little room for the driver to avoid the impact.
