Renton police gear up as Belgium team plans World Cup stay

Renton police are preparing for a major security operation as Belgium’s national soccer team plans a World Cup stay in the city.

RENTON, Wash. — One of the world’s top soccer teams is calling Renton home as it prepares for the World Cup, bringing excitement for fans and a major security operation for local police.

The Belgium national team is set to stay in Renton ahead of its match against Egypt in two weeks, turning the city — long known as the home of the Seattle Seahawks — into a temporary hub for international soccer.

For fans like Renton resident Joshua Torres, the team’s arrival is a rare opportunity.

“I’m super excited for Belgium to actually be here,” Torres said.

Torres, who has played soccer for nearly three decades, said the sport continues to hold a special place in his life. He hopes to catch a glimpse of the team while it trains nearby.

“I’m actually a big fan of the Belgium national team,” Torres said. “So if they’re going to be around here, I’m hoping I can catch a glimpse of them, maybe catch a practice or even just see them around would be awesome.”

While fans look forward to seeing international stars up close, the Renton Police Department is preparing for the logistics of keeping the team safe.

“It certainly is unique. It doesn’t happen very often,” said Deputy Chief Ryan Rutledge. “Probably in my career, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Renton police will serve as the lead agency for security throughout the team’s stay in June, coordinating coverage across multiple locations.

“At most, we could have 15 different security spots,” Rutledge said. “Whether that’s at the Sounders’ practice facility, at the hotel, or during escorts between locations.”

The department received a federal grant to cover the cost of World Cup-related security, allowing additional officers from surrounding agencies to assist. Police said the added responsibilities will not impact 911 response times.

“We really want to make sure that the community is safe, all the fans that are coming to town are safe, and all the players are safe,” Rutledge said.

The team’s presence is also bringing the global appeal of soccer to the local level.

“Beautiful game. That’s it. It’s the beautiful game,” Torres said. “I think it has something to offer for everyone, really.”

City officials say 15 World Cup watch parties are planned at the Legacy Square in downtown Renton, with the opening day event for the new space held June 6th from 1pm – 8pm. City officials said the space will be a permanent fixture and will host various events throughout the summer and year.

According RPD, Belgium is arriving in town Monday, June 8.
