Record floods threaten Skagit County as aging dike system tested

About 75,000 people were told to prepare to evacuate.

SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — Potential record floods are threatening Skagit County as the Skagit River is expected to wreak havoc on the valley over the next two days, and an aging dike system has people nervous.

Mount Vernon officials have issued Level 3 (Go now!) evacuations for some residents.

Residents in the impacted areas should leave now as danger is imminent. Officials urge residents to follow directions from local government agencies and the fire department. Do not return home until it is deemed safe.
