There are less than 50 Malayan tapirs in North America, and Ume is the second one born at the Tacoma zoo.
The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium welcomed enthusiastic crowds Friday as Ume, a three-month-old Malayan tapir calf, made her highly anticipated public debut.
“We wanted to come specifically to see the baby tapir. We have been following her growth on social media. We’re excited to see her perfect chonk in person,” Bill Pevey, who traveled from Atlanta said.
Born on Feb. 2 at just 20 pounds, Ume gained millions of views on social media.
