Prosecutors say mother left baby in trash can in North Seattle in 1997, DNA evidence led to arrest

Prosecutors charged a 50-year-old woman with second-degree murder 23 years after her newborn baby was found dead in a trash can at a Lake City gas station.

Seattle police arrested Christine Warren after DNA evidence linked her to the infant’s death that was ruled a homicide in 1997, the Seattle Police Department said in a statement last week. She was booked into King County Jail Thursday, according to jail records. She was held on $10,000 bail.

The infant was found on Nov. 20, 1997 by a Chevron store clerk who reported it to police.

The decades-old cold case was solved through genetic genealogy, which has gained popularity in the past few years
