One year after lightning strike, Hoquiam church looks to community for help

A Tornado Warning on same day inspired a children’s book.

HOQUIAM, Wash. — A lightning strike during last year’s bomb cyclone destroyed the steeple of Saron Lutheran-First Presbyterian Church in Hoquiam on Nov. 20, 2024. 

Nearly a year later, the congregation is still working to complete repairs and raise funds for a reinforced replacement.

The early morning strike toppled the church’s steeple and devastated its electrical infrastructure. 

“All of the wiring outlets, light fixtures, all had to be redone,” said Ruth Hamilton, president of the church council. 

The damage extended to stained glass windows, some of which remain under repair.
