Olympia man, 74, dies during Grand Canyon hike

The Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating Smith’s cause of death.

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, Ariz. — An Olympia man died last week during a lengthy hike in the Grand Canyon.

Dennis Smith, 74, was attempting a rim-to-rim hike but was found unresponsive on the North Kaibab Trail around 4:45 p.m. on May 15, according to National Park Service (NPS) personnel. The release says Smith was “an avid and experienced hiker,” and his cause of death remains under investigation by the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
