Officials mourn the loss of ‘heroic’ Idaho firefighters killed in sniper ambush

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison were killed in the shooting.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Authorities identified the firefighters involved in a deadly sniper ambush Sunday afternoon in northern Idaho.

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Harwood, 42, and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison, 52, were killed in the shooting, officials said Monday afternoon at a press conference. Harwood and Morrison were killed by the suspected shooter, Wess Roley, following an ambush. Roley was found dead Sunday evening and is believed to have killed himself.
