Northern Lights unlikely to be visible in Washington Monday

There’s lingering geomagnetic activity from a coronal mass ejection, but it likely won’t be strong enough to see.

SEATTLE — Although there may still be some residual geomagnetic activity from a coronal mass ejection that hit Earth’s atmosphere over the weekend, it’s unlikely to result in visible northern lights over much of Washington state overnight Monday. 

The coronal mass ejection erupted from the sun on Friday evening, with solar plasma impacting Earth’s atmosphere late Sunday. The effect of that storm is still lingering, but it’s likely to be strongest when it’s daylight outside in western Washington, at around 11 a.m. Monday.
