Mystery unearthed in Skagit County as historian works to identify lost graves

A century-old burial site revealed forgotten patients from a former psychiatric hospital.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — A mystery has been unearthed in a Skagit County cemetery, where hundreds of lost and forgotten graves have been discovered dating back more than a century. 

Most of the graves are for patients from the former Northern State Psychiatric Hospital.

The Northern State Hospital Cemetery in Sedro-Wooley officially recorded 1,487 “respectful” burials, but what has emerged is far more complex and troubling than the records suggest.
