Mission Creek prison closes, but state keeping it ‘warm’

The closure of the Mission Creek prison is saving the state approximately $12 million a year.

MASON COUNTY, Wash. — The inmates and most of the employees at the Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women are gone, but there are still signs of life in the prison.

The state closed the doors Oct. 1 a result of state budget cuts.

The savings are expected to be about $12 million a year, according to the Department of Corrections (DOC).

But the state is not abandoning the property.

“It’s being warm closed,” said Chris Wright, DOC spokesperson.
