SUMAS, Wash. — Flooding in Whatcom County surged past 2021 levels on Thursday, cutting off access to the city of Sumas, damaging levees, closing major highways and forcing evacuations across multiple communities.
Officials said the Nooksack River overtopped its banks near Everson after another day of heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service upgraded the event from “moderate” to “major flooding” overnight, citing rising water, damaged dikes and widespread infrastructure impacts. Flood conditions are expected to persist for another day or two, according to Sumas Mayor Bruce Bosch.
