Lewis County juvenile facility to remain overcrowded after bills fail

Legislators failed to pass bills to reduce the population at Green Hill School.

LEWIS COUNTY, Wash. — Despite the well-documented problems blamed on overcrowding at the state’s only maximum security facility for juvenile offenders, Green Hill School will continue to operate with a population considered unsafe.

The state facility, located in Lewis County, was built to safely house 180 offenders. 

The population has been above that figure since June 2023. As of this week, 229 young men were being housed at Green Hill School.
