King County officials propose $26M boost for transit safety

The plan would add police officers and security guards as safety concerns persist for transit riders.

KING COUNTY, Wash — Elected officials from King County and the City of Seattle are working to invest millions of dollars to bolster Metro’s safety and security this year, months after the killing of a bus driver while on duty.

“No one’s going to ride the bus if they don’t feel safe,” King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci said.

In December 2024, Shawn Yim, 59, was fatally stabbed by a passenger. His death was the first killing of a Metro bus driver in 26 years.
