King County Metro installs new bus partitions to boost safety

The move follows the December killing of 59-year-old driver Shawn Yim, who was stabbed while on duty near the University of Washington.

SEATTLE — Six months after a Metro bus driver was killed on the job, King County is rolling out new safety partitions on more than 1,000 buses in an effort to protect its operators.

Transit drivers and union leaders say the move is a step forward, but more must be done.

Harold Batson, a 25-year Metro veteran, said he’s experienced multiple dangerous situations behind the wheel.

“I have been in situations where I’ve had to abandon the bus,” Batson said.
