King County approves sales tax to avert public safety cuts amid $160M deficit

The tax takes effect Oct. 1 with collections beginning in January 2026.

SEATTLE — King County residents will soon pay an additional 10 cents on every $100 purchase after the County Council approved a new sales tax to stave off deep cuts to public safety and essential services.

In an 8-1 vote Tuesday, councilmembers passed the “Safe and Stable Communities Sales Tax,” a one-tenth of 1% sales and use tax aimed at closing a looming $160 million general fund deficit.
