Incarcerated women work to reshape futures by earning degrees while in prison

Around 40 women earned GEDs, high school diplomas, and vocational degrees this week. Nearly 1,000 people statewide earned degrees while incarcerated last year.

GIG HARBOR, Wash. — At the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) in Gig Harbor, dozens of women are working to reshape their futures one class at a time.

On Tuesday afternoon, around 40 incarcerated women donned caps and gowns to receive GEDs, high school diplomas, and vocational degrees through Olympic College.

“I am graduating from technical design as a dean’s list,” said Jessica Handlen, who took part in the graduation ceremony.
