‘I feel very stupid now’: Elderly Portland man followed into bank, scammed out of $10K by fake contest

He thought he’d won big when the caller claimed to be Publishers Clearing House. Instead, a scammer met him at a bank, and told him to withdraw thousands of dollars.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Earlier this month, an 87-year-old Portland man got a call from a man claiming he’d won hundreds of thousands of dollars — and a brand new SUV — from Publishers Clearing House. However, he was told that in order to get that money, he’d need to pay up first.
