Hugo House writers, teachers call on executive director to resign over structural racism

Pressure is building on Seattle literary nonprofit and writing center Hugo House as many prominent writers and teachers have publicly called for the resignation of Executive Director Tree Swenson over structural and systemic racism within the organization.

In July 2020, over 200 writers, members and teachers signed an open letter to the nonprofit’s board raising internal issues such as lack of diversity in teacher and students, lack of outreach to communities of color, tokenizing writers of color and failing to be transparent about structural racism.
