From Hiroshima to Hope: Seattle marks 80th anniversary of atomic bombings

Green Lake became a glowing memorial Wednesday to the thousands of lives lost in the 1945 Japan bombings.

SEATTLE — Eighty years after the United States dropped the atomic bomb nicknamed “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, killing 140,000 people by the end of 1945, a Seattle community gathered Wednesday evening to transform historical tragedy into hope for the future.

The event, called “From Hiroshima to Hope,” took place on the shores of Green Lake, where approximately 1,500 people prepared lanterns labeled in Japanese with words such as love, bond, truth and friendship. Each lantern represented wishes for peace in honor of the tens of thousands of atomic
