In Sumas, Washington, floodwaters from the Nooksack River have transformed the town into a lake, echoing similar devastation from 2021.
SUMAS, Wash. — On Friday, much of Sumas still looked more like a lake than a city.
Floodwaters continue to cover streets, yards and farmland after the Nooksack River overflowed, pushing water deep into this small Whatcom County community. Even as some water begins to move through the drainage system, many roads remain impassable, and some residents are still unable to return home.
“We had to wade our way down to the pharmacy,” one resident said, describing daily life amid the flooding.
