Firefighters brave precarious trestle to halt Vance Creek fire

State fire crews called Lacey Fire District 3 for backup on July 31.

MASON COUNTY, Wash. — Members of Lacey Fire District 3’s specialized rescue team crawled across a deteriorating 300-foot-high railroad trestle in Mason County on July 31 to help fight a wildfire in the Vance Creek valley.

State helicopters were using water to try and extinguish the flames on the wood-topped trestle that is closed to train traffic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lt. Scott Santhuff said the helicopters had trouble putting water on the lumber below.
