Federal judge rules in favor of King County Sheriff’s Office in Burien camping ban dispute

Earlier this week, the King County sheriff filed a legal complaint arguing the recent amendment to the ban is unconstitutional.

BURIEN, Wash. — A United States District Court judge ruled Thursday that the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) will not need to enforce a recent controversial amendment to Burien’s public camping ordinance.

In early March, the Burien City Council approved an amendment to its existing ordinance that would create more limitations for people experiencing homelessness in the city. The amendment, approved by a 5-2 vote, creates a 500-foot buffer zone around parks, libraries, schools, daycares, and senior centers and makes it illegal for the unhoused to sleep
