Cameraman recalls ‘living nightmare’ during Mount St. Helens eruption rescue

Michael Lienau, part of the first film crew documenting the aftermath of the Mount St. Helens, said the experience was a “living nightmare.”

SKAMANIA COUNTY, Wash — Sunday marked 45 years since Mount St. Helens erupted, sending ash, lava, mud and debris flowing down the mountainside. Fifty-seven people were killed.

To this day, it is still the deadliest volcanic eruption in U.S. history.
