Washington’s Catholic bishops sued the state over a new law requiring clergy to report child abuse, claiming religious discrimination.

SEATTLE — Washington state Catholic bishops are suing the state over a new law that requires clergy members to be mandatory reporters of child abuse or neglect.

The Catholic church’s top bishops in the state filed a lawsuit Thursday, arguing the new law violates their First Amendment right to practice freedom of religion and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
