THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. — Sixty-seven animals are recovering at a Pierce County sanctuary after they were rescued this week from what authorities describe as deplorable conditions in Thurston County.
The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is conducting an animal cruelty investigation. A spokesperson said more details will be released Thursday.

Heartwood Haven, an animal sanctuary in Pierce County, is now caring for the animals, which include ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, and seven pigs.
