1981 Mount Rainier avalanche remains the deadliest in the U.S. in the past few decades

A group of amateur climbers and a guide were killed when a large chunk of the Ingraham Glacier fractured.

SEATTLE — Every year, between 25 and 30 people are killed in avalanches in the U.S., according to the National Avalanche Center, and Washington state has been home to some of the most deadliest.  

The most recent deadly avalanche occurred near Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, when group of backcountry skiers were swept up. Eight bodies have been recovered, with one more person presumed dead.
