TACOMA, Wash. — Pierce County is confronting a serious situation that officials say could bankrupt the county: more than 100 legal claims alleging young people detained at its juvenile detention facility were sexually abused by employees spanning from the 1980s to 2000s.

The claims center on Remann Hall, the county’s juvenile justice facility, where former detainees say they suffered abuse at the hands of guards and other staff members.
