5th Avenue Theatre’s 2015-16 Season Features ‘Matilda the Musical’ and ‘The Sound of Music’

Matilda the Musical begins the 2015-16 5th Avenue Theatre season on a family friendly note.

It was 35 years ago that the 5th Avenue Theater Association saved its historic namesake venue and complete a renovation that helped it remain a gem of the arts season. The organization has rolled out the lineup for its 35th anniversary season, and it continues the space’s strong musical theater tradition. Both kicking off and highlighting the schedule is the first national tour of Matilda the Musical. Based on Roald Dahl’s children’s novel, the story of the bright, big-dreaming little girl was a critical smash both on Broadway and London’s West End, capturing four Tony Awards and a record seven Olivier Awards (aka British Tonys). Matilda is followed up by the world premiere of the Broadway-bound Waterfall. Based on the Thai novel Behind the Painting, the story follows a Thai student who falls for the American wife of a Thai diplomat.

Other familiar musicals on the 2015–16 slate include Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, the corporate satire How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and the Stephen Sondheim’s always killer show, Assassins. Rounding out the lineup is Sleeping Beauty Wakes, which imagines what would’ve happened if Sleeping Beauty slept for centuries and woke in a modern sleep disorder clinic, a revisal of the Gold Rush western Paint Your Wagon, and the sinister intentions of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
