‘Union County’ Review: Will Poulter and Noah Centineo Integrate Seamlessly With a Cast of Recovering Addicts in Low-Key Opioid Portrait

Adam Meeks studied film at NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts, where one can imagine the true-to-his-roots filmmaker learning alongside eclectic classmates. Manhattan must have felt like a stark break from the reality of rural Ohio, where Meeks grew up, but instead of abandoning his upbringing, the way so many do after moving to the big city, the writer-director honors what he left behind — and especially those struggling with the opioid epidemic back home — in his feature debut, “Union County.” The make-or-break ingredient turns out to be British actor Will Poulter, whose immersive commitment dovetails beautifully with Meeks’ unvarnished sensibility.
