Although Michael Jordan retired (for the first time) from the NBA a month earlier, Nike still released the NBA superstar’s signature basketball sneakers the Air Jordan 9 in Nov. 1993. Instead of spending his retirement at the golf course, Jordan joined the minor league team Birmingham Barons in the hopes of being called up to the Chicago White Sox in the MLB.
Jordan never worn them on the court when they were first released, but he did wear a cleated-version of the shoes on the baseball diamond.
