Netflix cancels ‘Girlboss’ after one season

The boss is getting fired — the Girlboss[1] that is.

Netflix confirmed Monday that the American comedy series has been canceled after one season[2].

Netflix has announced that there will be no second season of ‘Girlboss.’ USA TODAY

The series, which is loosely based on Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso’s memoir/self-help book, starred Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, The Longest Ride) in its 13-episode season.

Girlboss was created and executive produced by Kay Cannon, previously behind Pitch Perfect 2 and 30 Rock, and directed by Christian Ditter (How to Be Single).

The arrival of Girlboss came after the departure of another similarly titled series, Girls[3], but Cannon was quick to specify that the two shows had little else in common.

“I was very sensitive to that title alone, that people would make this automatic connection, I think to the point where there’s absolutely no nudity on the show,” Cannon said in April[4].

Finding a place for Girlboss was no easy task, either. At a panel in February, executive producer Charlize Theron explained the struggles[5] of finding the right home for the show.

“When we got the rights, we went to one other place (aside from Netflix),” Theron said. “Just to give you an example, we sat in a room, the feedback we got was absolutely shocking — it was mostly men in the room. We walked out with a sense that if we didn’t find the right home for this, it would become something very mediocre.”

Despite their struggles, turning to a team of men was not part of the plan for Cannon and Theron.

Cannon brought in a writers’ room with a majority-female staff, with Amoruso joining to shape the show as an executive producer.

The cancellation news comes after goodbyes to other short-lived Netflix series including Sense8[6], which was canceled earlier this month, and hellos to new women-centered stories such as GLOW[7], which began streaming Friday.
