2015 Oscar Noms Announced!

On Sunday, February 22nd at 7:00P.M. Eastern Time, the 87th annual Academy Awards Show will honor the best movies of 2014. Everything and everyone from best actors to best soundtracks will be recognized. Will you be ready to see “who the Oscar goes to…?”

The most sought after award is always the Best Picture Award. This year, there are some incredible nominees. American Sniper tells the true story of a patriotic American who joins the Navy SEALS in Iraq as their most skilled sniper with the most confirmed kills. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was a love-it or hate-it movie with Michael Keaton as an actor who left a lucrative, but hokey movie franchise to write, produce, direct, and act in his own Broadway play. How much is real and how much is in his mind? The Imitation Game takes on the subject of Alan Turing, the man who created the first computer and basically won WWII. The Grand Budapest Hotel is a pleasure to the eye, a pure farce with wonderful comedic acting. To be honest, I have not seen the last nominees that I am going to list here. Boyhood is a movie that was filmed over several years, using the same actors, as the boy grew up. Selma takes on Martin Luther King, Jr’s marches in Selma. The Theory of Everything is the life story of genius Stephen Hawking, and Whiplash is about a student who wants to become a great jazz drummer who ends up with a relentlessly demanding teacher.

Best Actor is a leading role includes familiar names: Steve Carrell for Foxcatcher, Michael Keaton for Birdman, Bradley Cooper for American Sniper, Benedict Cumberbatch for the Imitation Game, and Eddie Redmayne, the least well known in the group, for The Theory of Everything.

Best Actress nominees include Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night, Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl, Felicity Jones for The Theory of Everything, Julianne Moore for Still Alice, and Reese Witherspoon for Wild.

Supporting Actor nominees are Robert Duvall from The Judge, Ethan Hawke for Boyhood, Edward Norton for Birdman, Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher, and J.K. Simmons for Whiplash.

Supporting Actresses include Patricia Arquette for Boyhood, Laura Dern for Wild, Keira Knightly for The Imitation Game, Emma Stone for Birdman, and Meryl Streep for Into the Woods.

Rather than continuing on with lists, I thought I’d make my predictions so that you can compare them with your own. I will only be able to choose from performances I have actually seen, so I’m at a slight  disadvantage. I predict that Birdman SHOULD win because it is overall amazing acting, cinematography, and just a really movie, but American Sniper WILL win because Bradley Cooper stepped his acting way up and the true story of a patriot, directed by Clint Eastwood is probably charmed. For Best Actor, Steve Carrell was good, as were Bradley Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch, but Michael Keaton really sold his part. He was brilliant. Best Actress? I only saw Rosamund Pike, and she was good, but I’m thinking therer may have been someone better. Supporting Actor: I saw Robert Duvall and Edward Norton, but Mark Ruffalo was really wonderful in Foxcatcher. Supporting Actress has Kiera Knightly, whom I’m not fond of in anything, and Emma Stone who was really great in Birdman, so I’ll vote for her.

Join me next month to see how well I guessed the winners!
