MADRID (AP) — The Spanish cycling federation says former national mountain bike champion Inaki Lejarreta was killed when he was hit by a car while cycling.

The federation says the 29-year-old Lejarreta was riding Sunday in the town of Iurreta in the northern Basque region.

Lejarreta was Spain’s mountain bike champion in 2007. He competed in cross-country cycling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and professionally with the Orbea team.

He was the nephew of cyclist Marino Lejarreta, who won the Spanish Vuelta in 1982.
