Red Flag Warning Issued for 2 Counties in Southern California as Conditions Continue to Worsen

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties from 2 AM to 6 PM PST Saturday, as Santa Ana winds and low humidity raise the risk of fast-moving wildfires.

NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard warned of rapid fire growth and extreme fire behavior with any new fire start, especially late Friday night through Saturday.

Red Flag Warning Details

The warning covers five zones: the Santa Clarita Valley, the Western and Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, the Santa Susana Mountains, and the Western San Gabriel Mountains and Highway 14 Corridor.

Winds: northeast 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Isolated gusts of 45 to 55 mph are possible.

Humidity: minimums of 8 to 20 percent, with poor overnight recoveries.

If a fire starts, conditions favor extreme fire behavior that would threaten life and property.

Santa Ana Winds Peak Saturday

NWS Los Angeles said weak to moderate Santa Ana winds will increase and peak on Saturday. Gusts of 30 to 45 mph will be common in typical wind-prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

The air will warm and dry, and fuels remain critically dry despite some minor greenup from recent rains.

What to Do

A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring now or will shortly. Use extreme caution with anything that can spark a wildfire.

Residents near wildland areas should be prepared to evacuate if a fire breaks out. Review your evacuation plans and stay aware of your surroundings.

NWS Los Angeles said elevated fire weather conditions are also possible outside the warned areas. Temperatures will warm near the coasts.
