Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across the Intermountain West, including Utah’s Wasatch and Uinta mountains near Alta, Brighton and Mirror Lake Highway, as early-season snow arrives Monday and Tuesday.
Advisories also cover Nevada’s Ruby Mountains and Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains. Drivers should expect slick roads and prepare for winter conditions at higher elevations.
Utah: Wasatch Mountains South of I-80
The advisory runs from 6 a.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. MDT Wednesday.
Snow is expected above 8,500 feet, with 4 to 6 inches in upper Little and Big Cottonwood canyons. Higher amounts are likely above 9,000 feet.
The advisory includes Brighton and Alta.
Guardsman Pass will likely see higher snowfall. Early-season snow on roads may be a significant risk for under-prepared travelers.
Utah: Western Uinta Mountains
This advisory is already in effect and runs until 6 a.m. MDT Wednesday.
Additional snow of 8 to 14 inches is possible, especially above 9,000 feet. It includes Mirror Lake Highway and Moon Lake.
Traction law restrictions may be enacted. Bald Mountain Pass remains open for now but may pose a significant risk to under-prepared travelers.
NWS Salt Lake City has recently posted about flooding and rainfall totals, not these advisories, so no Utah quote is included.
Nevada: Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range
NWS Elko’s advisory runs from 5 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. PDT Tuesday for Elko County, with 5 to 10 inches of snow.
Snow levels will drop to valley floors across northern and central Nevada late Monday through Tuesday morning.
Remnant tropical moisture from Rachel is merging with a cold Pacific trough, bringing widespread rain to central and eastern Nevada through Tuesday afternoon.
Wyoming: Wind River Mountains
NWS Riverton’s advisory runs until 6 a.m. MDT Wednesday for the Wind River Mountains East and West.
Expect a coating to 3 inches below 9,000 feet and 3 to 12 inches above. South Pass could see a coating to an inch, mainly on grassy surfaces.
Safety Reminders
Slow down and use caution while traveling.
