Hurricane Warning Reaches Inland Alabama as Isaias Brings Tropical Storm Warnings to Birmingham, Montgomery and West Georgia

Warnings for Isaias now extend far inland. A Hurricane Warning covers Conecuh County in south-central Alabama, and Tropical Storm Warnings stretch across central Alabama, east Mississippi and west Georgia.

The National Weather Service offices in Mobile, Birmingham, Memphis, Jackson, Peachtree City and Tallahassee issued the warnings Friday. Conditions are expected to deteriorate tonight.

NWS Mobile says Isaias is approaching the coast as a major hurricane. It expects the storm to weaken before landfall but remain a significant hurricane at impact.

Hurricane Warning: Conecuh County, Alabama

The warning covers Conecuh County, including Evergreen.

The forecast calls for winds equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane, from early this evening until early Saturday morning.

Forecasters also expect an additional 3 to 6 inches of rain, with a potential for major flooding.

South-Central Alabama

Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect for Butler, Crenshaw, Clarke, Monroe, Wilcox, Washington and Choctaw counties.

Butler County (Greenville) has the highest wind forecast, with a hurricane-force window from early this evening until early Saturday. The wind threat has increased.

Monroe (Monroeville) and Wilcox (Camden) could see 35 to 50 mph winds with gusts to 60 mph, plus 2 to 6 inches of additional rain.

Dale (Ozark) and Henry (Abbeville) counties in the southeast face a major flooding rain threat, with 2 to 4 inches more expected.

Central Alabama: Birmingham to Montgomery

NWS Birmingham issued Tropical Storm Warnings for almost all of central Alabama. A High Wind Warning covers the far northeast.

Warnings cover Birmingham, Hoover, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Selma, Prattville, Auburn, Opelika, Troy, Eufaula and Phenix City.

Tropical storm-force winds are expected from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon in Jefferson, Shelby, Chilton, Bibb, Perry, Dallas and Autauga counties. Gusts to 60 to 65 mph are possible.

Rainfall of 1 to 4 inches is forecast, with a Flood Watch in effect.

The tornado threat is highest in the east. Chambers, Lee, Russell, Barbour and Macon counties face a favorable setup for several tornadoes.

Lamar, Fayette, Walker and Northwest Alabama

Tropical Storm Warnings reach Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Winston, Marion, Pickens and Greene counties.

Gusts of 50 to 55 mph are possible, with up to 4 inches of rain.

East Mississippi

Tropical Storm Warnings now cover Lauderdale, Lowndes, Clay, Noxubee, Kemper, Oktibbeha, Neshoba, Newton, Winston, Jasper, Jones, Clarke, Wayne, Choctaw and Webster counties.

NWS Memphis added Tupelo (Lee County), Itawamba, Monroe and Chickasaw counties.

Gusts of 35 to 50 mph are possible, with 1 to 4 inches of rain and flash flooding.

West and South Georgia

Tropical Storm Warnings cover Columbus, La Grange, Americus, Thomaston and Albany.

The warnings include Muscogee, Troup, Sumter, Upson, Dougherty, Harris, Meriwether, Pike, Heard and Talbot counties, among others.

Gusts of 40 to 45 mph are expected, with 3 to 6 inches of rain. Tornadoes are favorable across the region.

Rainfall could vary sharply over short distances, from 1 to 2 inches up to 5 to 8 inches within a few miles.

Safety Reminders

Finish preparations now. Winds could knock down trees and cause scattered power outages.

Have multiple ways to receive tornado warnings, and know where you will shelter.

Residents of manufactured homes should be ready to move to a sturdier shelter.

Never drive through flooded roads. Stay away from rising creeks and streams.
