A Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon EDT Saturday to 6 p.m. EDT Sunday for Ontonagon and Gogebic counties in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula, as hot, dry and windy weather raises the risk of fast-spreading wildfires.
The National Weather Service in Marquette issued the warning Friday afternoon. A Special Weather Statement also warns of elevated wildfire potential across most of the U.P.
Red Flag Warning: Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties
The warning runs from noon EDT (11 a.m. CDT) Saturday to 6 p.m. EDT (5 p.m. CDT) Sunday.
Saturday: South winds of 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 35 mph. Humidity as low as 32 percent, recovering to 55 to 60 percent at night.
Sunday: South winds of 10 to 15 mph, gusting to 25 mph. Humidity again as low as 32 percent.
Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Forecasters cite warm temperatures and exceptionally dry fuels. Campfires, grills, smoking materials, chain saws and ATVs can all throw a spark.
Elevated Wildfire Risk Across the U.P.
A Special Weather Statement covers most of the U.P., with south winds as high as 30 mph and minimal recent rainfall.
It includes Keweenaw, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Luce, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta, Schoolcraft, Chippewa and Mackinac counties.
Burn restrictions remain in effect. Details are at the Michigan DNR or by calling 866-922-2876.
Drought and Near-Record Heat
NWS Marquette warned earlier this week that drought and warmth would combine with wind.
Temperatures will soar into the 80s over the central and western U.P. this weekend.
Safety Reminders
Do not burn outdoors. Obey all local burn restrictions.
Take care with grills, smoking materials and ATVs, which can spark a fire in dry fuels.
Report any wildfire immediately by calling 911.
