Dangerous Freeze Watch and Frost Advisory Issued for Parts of Oregon as Temperatures Plummet

A Freeze Watch is in effect for Central Oregon, the Grande Ronde Valley and Wallowa County, with temperatures as low as 29 to 30 degrees possible late Friday night into Saturday morning.

A Frost Advisory is also in effect for the Upper Hood River Valley, with lows of 32 to 36 degrees.

The National Weather Service offices in Pendleton and Portland issued the alerts as a cooler weather pattern moves in after a record-warm stretch.

Freeze Watch: Central Oregon and Grande Ronde Valley

NWS Pendleton’s watch runs from late Friday night through Saturday morning.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are possible.

Cities include Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Madras, La Grande, Union, Elgin and Cove.

Freeze Watch: Wallowa County

The coldest readings are forecast for the Wallowa Valley, with lows as low as 29 degrees.

The watch covers Joseph, Wallowa and Enterprise, with the same timing: late Friday night through Saturday morning.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could be damaged.

NWS Pendleton said freezing chances continue into the weekend.

Frost Advisory: Upper Hood River Valley

NWS Portland’s advisory runs from midnight Friday night to 9 a.m. PDT Saturday.

Temperatures of 32 to 36 degrees will result in frost, especially near Parkdale and Odell.

Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

NWS Portland said a significant cooldown is coming this weekend.

Windy Friday Ahead

Gusty winds return Friday ahead of the cold. NWS Pendleton gives a 50 to 95 percent chance of gusts over 40 mph in its area.

Safety Reminders

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

Move potted plants indoors. Cover sensitive plants with lightweight cotton fabric such as bedsheets or thin blankets.

Protect outdoor plumbing from freezing. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
