Dangerous Freeze and Frost Warnings Issued for Parts of Massachusetts and Maine as Temperatures Drop

A Freeze Warning and widespread Frost Advisories are in effect across Massachusetts, southern Maine and New Hampshire tonight, with some of the coldest temperatures of the season so far expected by Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service offices in Boston/Norton, Gray and Caribou have all issued alerts.

Massachusetts: Freeze Warning

NWS Boston has upgraded the Frost Advisory to a Freeze Warning for western Massachusetts.

It covers Western and Eastern Franklin County and Western and Eastern Hampshire County, including Greenfield, Orange, Amherst, Northampton and Charlemont.

The warning runs from 11 p.m. this evening to 9 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

Sub-freezing temperatures of 26 to 31 degrees are expected.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation, and may damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Massachusetts: Frost Advisory

A Frost Advisory remains in effect across much of central, eastern, southeastern and western Massachusetts over the same hours.

It covers Northern Worcester, Central and Northern Middlesex, Eastern and Western Hampden, Western Norfolk, Northern and Southern Bristol, and Western and Southern Plymouth counties.

Cities include Springfield, Lowell, Framingham, Brockton, Taunton, Fall River, New Bedford, Fitchburg and Foxborough.

Temperatures dropping to between 31 and 36 degrees will result in frost formation.

NWS Boston said the cooler air will bring widespread frost before a quick warm-up.

Southern Maine and New Hampshire

NWS Gray has a Frost Advisory from midnight tonight to 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

In Maine, it covers Central Interior Cumberland, Androscoggin, Kennebec, Interior Waldo, Coastal York, Coastal Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Coastal Waldo counties.

In New Hampshire, it covers Strafford, Eastern Hillsborough and Interior Rockingham counties.

Cities include Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn, Brunswick, Rockland, Belfast, Manchester, Nashua, Derry and Dover.

Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will result in frost formation.

NWS Gray noted that wintry conditions arrived behind a strong cold front.

Downeast Maine

NWS Caribou has a Frost Advisory from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday for Interior Hancock and Central Washington counties.

Calais, Dedham, Wesley, Princeton, Grand Lake Stream and Amherst are among the communities included, with temperatures as low as 33 degrees.

A Quick Warm-Up

The cold snap won’t last. Forecasters expect temperatures to warm through midweek, peaking on Thursday, before cooler weather returns Friday and continues into the weekend.

Safety Reminders

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, such as covering vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors.

In the Freeze Warning area, protect outdoor plumbing to prevent pipes from freezing.
