Dangerous Freeze Warnings Issued for 8 Counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin as Temperatures Drop

A Freeze Warning and a broad swath of Frost Advisories are in effect across Minnesota and Wisconsin, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 28 degrees early Monday.

The National Weather Service offices in Duluth, Grand Forks, Green Bay and the Twin Cities have all issued alerts ahead of the cold night.

Freeze Warning: Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin

NWS Duluth has a Freeze Warning in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Monday.

In Minnesota, it covers Koochiching, North Itasca, Central St. Louis, North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake counties, including International Falls, Ely, Hibbing, Bigfork and Isabella.

Temperatures could drop as low as 28 degrees there.

In Wisconsin, the warning covers Ashland and Iron counties, including Ashland and Hurley, with lows as cold as 29 degrees.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and sensitive vegetation, and may damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Frost Advisories Across the Northland

NWS Duluth also has Frost Advisories in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Monday for a large part of the surrounding region.

In Minnesota, that includes Crow Wing and South Cass counties, plus Carlton and South St. Louis, Pine, Aitkin, North Cass, South Itasca, and Southern Cook and Lake counties. Duluth, Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Grand Marais and Two Harbors are among the cities covered.

In Wisconsin, it covers Douglas, Bayfield, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer and Price counties, including Superior, Hayward, Spooner and Bayfield.

Temperatures as low as 32 to 34 degrees will result in frost formation.

The Duluth office says the sunny pattern will last through midweek.

Northwest and Central Minnesota

NWS Grand Forks has a Frost Advisory from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Monday for Wadena, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, North and South Beltrami, East Marshall, North and South Clearwater, and Roseau counties.

Bemidji, Park Rapids, Roseau, Baudette and Red Lake are among the communities included, with lows as cold as 34 degrees.

NWS Twin Cities has a matching advisory for central Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

It covers Benton, Morrison, Todd, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties in Minnesota, and Barron, Polk, Rusk, Chippewa and Eau Claire counties in Wisconsin, with temperatures of 34 to 36 degrees.

Central and Northeast Wisconsin

NWS Green Bay has a Frost Advisory remaining in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT Monday across central, north central and northeast Wisconsin.

It covers Vilas, Oneida, Forest, Florence, Lincoln, Langlade, Menominee, Marathon, Oconto and Marinette counties, including Wausau, Rhinelander, Antigo, Merrill and Peshtigo.

Temperatures from 31 to 36 degrees are expected to produce frost.

Warmer Days Ahead

The cold snap should be short-lived. Forecasters say sunshine and warming temperatures arrive midweek, with 60s and 70s returning across the region.

Safety Reminders

Take steps now to protect tender plants, such as covering vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors.

In the Freeze Warning area, protect outdoor plumbing to prevent pipes from freezing.
