Early Hazardous Frost Advisory Issued for 2 Counties in Maine as Temperatures Dip

A Frost Advisory is in effect for parts of Downeast Maine as clear skies let overnight temperatures slide into the mid-30s early Sunday.

The National Weather Service office in Caribou issued the advisory for interior Hancock and central Washington counties.

Where the Frost Advisory Applies

The advisory runs from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Sunday.

It covers Interior Hancock and Central Washington counties, including Eastbrook, Dedham, Amherst, Grand Lake Stream, Wesley, Princeton, Calais, Great Pond and Aurora.

Forecasters say temperatures in the mid 30s will result in frost formation.

Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, and plants left uncovered overnight may not survive.

NWS Caribou flagged the frost risk as part of its broader forecast for the region.

A Dry, Cold Weekend

The frost advisory comes during an otherwise dry stretch across the state, with highs expected in the upper 50s to low 60s Saturday and Sunday.

NWS Caribou says widespread frost is likely across the northern forecast area, with patchy frost possible elsewhere Downeast.

A Stormier Pattern Ahead

Forecasters say a storm system returns early next week, bringing rain amounts of 0.30 to 0.50 inch on Monday, though it’s expected to offer little relief to ongoing drought conditions.

Gusty winds are possible Tuesday, with the higher chance favoring northern Maine. Forecasters say winds could reach 35 to 40 mph, raising the risk of isolated power outages and a quicker end to fall foliage color.

Safety Reminders

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold, such as covering vegetation or bringing potted plants indoors overnight.

Gardeners in the advisory area should plan for frost-sensitive crops to be covered before temperatures bottom out early Sunday morning.
