A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect along the Lake Ontario shoreline in western New York, with strong currents making swimming dangerous through late tonight.
The National Weather Service office in Buffalo issued the statement for beaches in Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga and Oswego counties.

Beachgoers are being urged to stay out of Lake Ontario entirely while the statement remains active, since currents can pull swimmers away from shore quickly and without warning.
Weekend Weather Pattern
The lake hazard comes as a weekend weather system moves through the region. NWS Buffalo says rain is expected to spread from central New York into the Genesee Valley through the day, a pattern that can also stir up rougher water along the shoreline.
Which Beaches Are Affected
The advisory stretches across the Lake Ontario shoreline from Orleans County east through Monroe, Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties to Oswego County.
That includes popular swimming spots near Rochester and along the lakefront communities further east toward Oswego.
Safety Reminders
Swimmers and waders should stay out of the water at the affected beaches until the statement expires. Even experienced swimmers can be overpowered by strong lake currents.
Anyone who spots someone in distress in the water is urged to call 911 rather than attempting a rescue without proper equipment.
