A Frost Advisory spans six Maine counties overnight into Thursday morning. Clear skies and calm air are letting temperatures fall fast after dark.
Two National Weather Service offices issued the advisories. Together they stretch from the Bangor area down through the foothills and to the Midcoast.
Southern Penobscot: Bangor and the Orono Area
The NWS Caribou office issued its advisory for Southern Penobscot County. It runs from midnight tonight to 7 AM Thursday.
Temperatures as low as 36 degrees will bring frost to the area. Bangor, Brewer, Old Town and Orono are all included.
Five More Counties From the Foothills to the Coast
The NWS Gray office covers the rest of the state’s frost risk tonight. Its advisory runs on the same timeline, midnight to 7 AM Thursday.
Southern Oxford, Southern Franklin, and Southern Somerset counties are included. So are both the interior and coastal sections of Waldo County, plus the Interior Cumberland Highlands.
Lows as cold as 33 degrees are expected. Towns in the advisory include Rumford, Farmington, Skowhegan, Belfast, Bridgton, and Norway.
Even coastal Waldo County isn’t spared tonight. That’s notable, since nearby water usually keeps shoreline spots a few degrees warmer than inland areas.
A Bigger System Is Already on Forecasters’ Minds
Tonight’s frost comes during a quiet stretch before things get busier. A potential nor’easter is being watched for this weekend.
Protecting Plants Tonight
Cover tender plants before dark. A bedsheet or frost cloth traps enough ground heat to help.
Bring potted plants inside if you can. They cool off faster than plants in the ground.
Harvest any tomatoes, peppers or squash still on the vine. They won’t survive a hard frost even under cover.
