The gray whale that made its way up the Willapa River was found dead over the weekend. It will remain in the river where it will decompose naturally.
RAYMOND, Wash. — The gray whale found dead in Pacific County’s Willapa River over the weekend was in “poor nutritional status” and was likely in a debilitated state, according to researchers.
The Cascadia Research Collective conducted what it called a “limited examination” Monday, with the help of the Chinook and Shoalwater Bay Tribes. Along with malnutrition, the whale had internal injuries related to being wrapped around debris.
