FIFE, Wash. — A steady stream of cars pulls into a gas station along a busy stretch of road in Fife, drivers inching forward in search of something increasingly hard to find, cheaper fuel.

With gas prices climbing across the country and soaring even higher in Washington state, where averages top $5 a gallon, many drivers are becoming more deliberate about where they fill up and how far they are willing to go to save.
