King County proposes $25M for World Cup safety, Lumen Field preps for security overhaul

The bulk of the proposed $25 million would cover staff overtime and additional personnel brought in to support safety operations.

SEATTLE — King County Executive Girmay Zahilay on Thursday proposed spending $25 million to secure Seattle’s FIFA World Cup matches this June.

By the time the first match kicks off, Lumen Field may be nearly unrecognizable. Crews are planning to install large, climb-proof fences around the stadium along with vehicle barriers to prevent potential threats from the surrounding roadways.

But the central hub for coordinating this summer’s massive safety operation will be located miles away, at an emergency operations center in Renton.
