State says study of mops designed to protect janitors, reduce costs

State ergonomists are observing two dozen janitors to measure how often and how hard their muscles work while mopping.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington Department of Labor & Industries is conducting what is believed to be the first-ever scientific study of janitorial services, observing how janitors use mops in an effort to reduce workplace injuries and save taxpayers money.

State ergonomists are observing two dozen janitors to measure how often and how hard their muscles work while mopping. Rather than evaluating technique, researchers are focused on comparing traditional mop designs against more ergonomic models to determine which is safer for workers.
