‘I was just defenseless’: WA Sen. Mike Chapman protects 71-year-old neighbor during violent attack

Police say Chapman saw his elderly neighbor on the ground and stepped in as the suspect kept attacking.

PORT ANGELES, Wash. — A 46-year-old Port Angeles man has been charged with assaulting his elderly neighbor before Washington state Sen. Mike Chapman intervened to protect him.

Joseph Weston Beeman was booked into the Clallam County Jail on March 28. He is charged with third-degree assault, obstructing a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $15,000. As of Tuesday morning, Beeman was still in custody.

According to court documents, Chapman called 911 at about 12:10 p.m. Saturday to report an assault in progress
