Washington Department of Ecology fines Amazon and Walmart for illegally selling climate-polluting products

The department says the companies are being penalized $1.1M in total for continuing to sell a refrigerant called R‑134a, which is prohibited in Washington.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington Department of Ecology issued penalties totaling over $1.1 million to Amazon Inc. and Walmart Inc. for illegally selling climate-polluting cooling and refrigeration products. 

Ecology says the penalties follow repeated warnings and extensive efforts over several years to help the companies comply with the law.
